The Maury Terry Files

Maury was a talented writer, television news producer and award-winning investigative journalist.  His best-known work was his 1987 book, “The Ultimate Evil,” wherein he posits an alternative theory for the “Son of Sam” murders, that it was a satanic cult of killers, rather than only David Berkowitz.  No other individual, including any member of law enforcement, has ever dug deeper, or pushed the “Son of Sam” case further, than Maury Terry.

Terry contended that David Berkowitz had co-conspirators residing in Yonkers, NY and the state of North Dakota which had not been investigated or followed-up by the New York Police Department. The core of Terry’s argument—and perhaps the most convincing aspect of his overarching theory—is that the NYPD was eager to close the case when they arrested Berkowitz on August 10, 1977. When the police found Berkowitz and he confessed, there were a lot of powerful people and institutions that wanted to simply move on.  Maury Terry, a journalist who grew up in Yonkers, did not move on. Instead, he continued to investigate the shootings, specifically the possible involvement of two of Berkowitz’s neighbors (John and Michael Carr, who both died under mysterious circumstances) and Berkowitz’s connection to the occult.

Maury Terry attempted to pressure the NYPD, as well as, district attorneys from Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens counties into reopening the “Son of Sam” case and pursuing the mounting evidence that David Berkowitz did not act alone.  Queens County District Attorney John Santucci was the only law enforcement official in the State of New York who was convinced that the evidence pointed to a conspiracy, and it was in the best interest of the public to reopen the case.  See the “Conspiracy – Queens D.A.” page.

Some of Maury Terry’s investigatory notes are provided below.  Please note, these are personal notes developed by Maury over the course of his investigation.  These notes contain the names of individuals that Maury believed may have had some connection to, or played some role in, the “Son of Sam” murders.  Despite the fact that many of them clearly appear to be low-life scumbags, these individuals have never been charged with any crime associated with this case, and should be presumed “innocent.”
