Case for Conspiracy - Yonkers

In 2004, John Hockenberry, investigative journalist with Dateline NBC, learned that the arrest of David Berkowitz didn’t actually close the Son of Sam case, and that in Berkowitz’s home town of Yonkers the case was still not officially closed. This revelation prompted a July 2, 2004 article by Hockenberry titled, Did ‘Son of Sam’ really act alone? The Yonkers Police Department did not comment on the NBC story, but after NBC sent them a FOIA request, Yonkers PD sent NBC a letter confirming that an investigation was started in 1996, and has not been closed to that day.

The Dateline NBC article is corroborated some 17 years later by retired Yonkers Police Detective Kevin Murphy, in Joshua Zeman’s Netflix documentary series, The Sons of Sam: A Descent into Darkness (2021).  According to Detective Murphy, there was still lots of conversation amongst the public about the Son of Sam, people were still scared. The Yonkers mayor at the time wanted to put an end to all of the speculation and doubt surrounding the case, so he gave Murphy full authority to initiate an investigation into the murders perpetrated by David Berkowitz (aka, “Son of Sam”) – specifically, whether Berkowitz had co-conspirators (residing in Yonkers, NY, Westchester County, NY or the state of North Dakota) which had not been investigated or followed-up by the New York Police Department. This is when Detective Murphy officially teamed-up with investigative journalist Maury Terry.

In Yonkers, Det. Murphy began to delve into the background of the case, and uncovered a litany of things that required further investigation. Det. Murphy identified several associates of David Berkowitz that hung around Untermyer Park in Yonkers, NY – they called themselves “The Children.” According to Det. Murphy’s investigation, several of these individuals were older, and generally just bad people. One person in particular lived at the same Yonkers, NY Pine Street address as David Berkowitz.  According to sources, this person knew the Carr brothers, and drove a yellow Volkswagen. Murphy tracked this individual down and brought him in for questioning.  The guy was terrified that if he opened his mouth he would be killed – several days after being questioned by Murphy this person killed himself.  Many of the other individuals approached by Murphy “lawyered-up” immediately – no one wanted to be implicated in this case. Through numerous off-the-record interviews, Murphy was able to corroborate the existence of “The Children,” and uncovered members who were involved with pornography and the drug trade. In 1998, two years into Det. Murphy’s investigation, he wrote up his report and presented it to the Queens District Attorney’s Office and NYPD top brass. The title of the report, Yonkers Police Department Special Investigations Division S.I.D. 2097 – Case Summary, June 2, 1998.”

Detective Murphy concluded that the Son of Sam shootings were NOT the acts of a lone David Berkowitz, rather, there were at least five other individuals involved in the shootings. Murphy further concluded that resources should be allocated to a reinvestigation of the case in order to bring to justice and prosecute all co-conspirators.

It should be noted that the NYPD refused to provide the Yonkers Police Department with access to ANY of the investigation evidence, forensic reports, or intelligence, that the NYPD had previously gathered during its original criminal investigation of the “Son of Sam” case from July 1976 to August 1977.

Another avenue of investigation that Detective Murphy pursued related to Daniel Carlton Gajdusek, M.D.  In 1998, Detective Murphy wrote a memo to the Assistant United States Attorney – Southern District of New York, indicating that in February, 1996, David Berkowitz spoke to a Yonkers Police Department confidential informant about a Yonkers cult member involved with the disappearance and murder of young  children.  According to Murphy’s report, Berkowitz stated that Daniel Carlton Gajdusek, a prominent gay medical doctor, Nobel Prize winner, and employee of the U.S. National Institute of Health (NIH), was this member of the Yonkers “Son of Sam” cult.  SEE THE CULT OF MOLOCH page for this other line of investigation.

Footnote:
A written request was made to Dateline NBC for a copy of the Yonkers PD FOIA response, but NBC never responded. A separate FOIA request was made to the Yonkers PD for any correspondence with Dateline NBC regarding the Son of Sam case, as well as, confirmation of an ongoing police investigation of the Son of Sam case.  Yonkers PD advised that all Yonkers Police Department Records/Reports prior to 1986 were destroyed. This statement seems irrelevant, as the report referenced in my FOIA request was a case summary of an investigation that was initiated sometime around 1996, with the actual case summary being prepared in 1998. The timeframe of this investigation is 10-12 years beyond the NYS Archives authorization date for the destruction of police documents.  The Yonkers statement is even more ridiculous given the fact that there acknowledgement to Dateline NBC that they couldn’t comment on an “ongoing case” was given in 2004.

A series of subsequent FOIA requests were made to the Yonkers Police Department, as well as, the Yonkers Mayors Office – all of these FOIA requests relating to the Son of Sam case, David Berkowitz, and Det. Murphy’s investigation reports met with similar denials.  It is difficult to believe that reports or investigatory materials relating to one of the most infamous serial murder cases in New York State history were simply scheduled for destruction without regard to their historical significance – again, this is simply not plausible

INVESTIGATION REPORT S.I.D. 2097 IS THE PIVITOL INVESTIGATORY EVIDENCE THAT ESTABLISHES THE LINKS BETWEEN DAVID BERKOTIZ AND CO-CONSPIRATORS INVOLVED IN THE “SON of SAM” SHOOTINGS.
